I'm a multidisciplinary digital product designer.

I believe that human-centred design creates meaningful products and services that, when aligned with business goals, can make awesome things happen. I strive for that sweet spot between customer desirability (do they want it?), feasibility (can we deliver it?), and viability (will it work for our business?).

I'm currently working at Totara working on the growth of their people and products. They have some great learning and performance management software, as Head of Experience Design my task is to ensure that experience goes from great to amazing.

I'm leading a team of researchers and designers who are moving the product forward along with other Totara teams.

I've was previously a product designer at Silverstripe for over 10 years, for the majority of that time I was leading a small UX team and the user experience and design of the Silverstripe open source CMS and Silverstripe's dedicated hosting and deployment service Silverstripe Cloud.

Over my career, my focus has ranged from designing print material like magazines, branding, marketing material, website design, and digital products including the front-end development of them.

Whether on my own or in collaboration with others, I love taking new ideas, setting them up with the foundations to be successful and encouraging them to grow.

Personal projects and activities

I love a hands-on creative project and a challenge—I’m fitting out a bus as a motorhome for our family and tracking the renovations and travels on dustyandthesardines.nz. My bus and motorbike are around the same age as me, so you could say I have a things for retro things.

I enjoy getting out on the water with either surfboard, kitesurf, or stand-up paddle board. I spent many years following winter seasons to snowboard, this took me overseas for about 9 years with the majority being spent in the Austrian Alps.

Having a fairly young family, a lot of my spare time now-a-days is spent with my kids, wife, and the dog. Summertime is when we typically take the opportunity to explore New Zealand, and visit friends across the country.
